Mayu Nozaki (野崎 真由 Nozaki Mayu) is a third-year middle school student and the younger brother of Umetarou Nozaki.

Appearance

Mayu has black hair and black eyes. He is tall, though slightly shorter than his brother, and physically fit, due to being the captain of his school's judo club.

His school uniform is a black gakuran, which he wears buttoned up. During practice, he is seen wearing his judo uniform.

Personality

Mayu's notable character trait is his laziness, as he exerts the minimum amount of effort necessary whenever possible. He is very laid-back and does not seem to care what other people think of him. He usually refers to people by their given names, albeit with the -san honorific. His texts are extremely sparse and he does not speak often. When he was younger, he got bullied due to his quietness. The only time he actually shows energy is during judo and other forms of physical exercise. He is very passionate about judo and sports in general, holding great respect for his seniors in sports clubs like Wakamatsu.

Mayu is also a skilled artist and learnt drawing to make diagrams of floor grappling techniques to show the judo club members. He used Mikoshiba's manga and figurine collection as references, so that he could draw attractive women to get the club members' interest.

Skills

Mayu is highly skilled at judo and is also the captain of the judo club. His love for judo is so great that it can drive him to accomplish almost anything else he sets his mind to. When he was told that he wouldn't be able to attend club unless he brought his grades up, he immediately raised them to perfection.

Mayu became skilled at drawing so that he could make the club members more interested in floor grappling techniques, by drawing cute girls in the various positions and holds. His friend Kobayashi posts his art to a blog titled "MayuMayu" (まゆまゆ), which is fairly popular.

Relationships

Umetarou Nozaki

Umetarou Nozaki is Mayu's older brother. Mayu calls him nii-san, and he is the only one able to understand Mayu's minimalist texts. When they were younger, he protected Mayu from bullies, which led to Mayu continuing to rely on others. Mayu didn't want Nozaki to move out, but he was too lazy to try stop him.

Mayu and Nozaki are close despite their physical distance, and they understand each other well. Mayu may be very lazy, but he does care about Nozaki, and sometimes compliments Nozaki’s work as well. He is also aware of Nozaki's career as the creator of Let's Fall in Love. In Chapter 101, while Nozaki and his assistants were asleep after pulling an all-nighter, Mayu finished their work for them by applying the screentones.

Yumeko Nozaki

Yumeko is Mayu's younger sister. They seem to have a normal sibling relationship. Although Mayu knows that Nozaki is Sakiko Yumeno, Yumeko does not believe him, and Mayu has decided not to try convince her because it would take too much effort.

Mikoto Mikoshiba

Mayu refers to Mikoshiba as "Mikoto-san" and they have a first-name basis with each other. They are good friends, although their friendship is not explained in detail. As shown in Chapter 72.5, Nozaki is of the opinion that they are close to each other. Ironically, when Nozaki asked Mayu if he preferred Mikoshiba or Kashima, Mayu picked Kashima on the basis that she looked like a hard worker, so he would have a relaxing future. In Chapter 98.5, Mikoshiba gave Mayu a smartphone case as a souvenir from his school trip. Although Mayu owns a flip phone, he gave the smartphone case to his friend so that the gift would not be wasted.

In Chapter 121, when Hori discovered Mikoshiba's questionable manga collection, Mayu defended Mikoshiba by claiming that it was his, although Hori did not believe him. In Chapter 128, it is shown that Mayu has been taking pictures of Mikoshiba to show to his female classmates, as payment for them making sure that he doesn't get caught napping in class. Mikoshiba is unaware of this.

Mayu and Mikoshiba text each other under the pseudonyms of "MayuMayu" and "Mamiko"; neither is aware of the other's true identity. Mikoshiba believes that he is texting a female middle schooler who likes judo and drawing.

Chiyo Sakura

Not much is known about the friendship between Mayu and Chiyo, but they seem to be close, as Mayu refers to her as "Chiyo-san". He is aware of Chiyo's infatuation with his older brother.

Hirotaka Wakamatsu

Wakamatsu is Mayu's upperclassman, and Mayu holds him in high esteem. They enjoy talking about sports together. Wakamatsu is one of the few characters that Mayu uses the -senpai honorific for.

Rei Kashima

Mayu and Rei met in Chapter 114, near Roman Academy while they were waiting for their respective older siblings. Rei became interested in Mayu's pinning techniques and he explained it to her further with his drawings. Because of her, Mayu's blog began featuring art with men and far-fetched, suggestive captions and storylines.

Kobayashi

Mayu and Kobayashi seem to be good friends. They are both members of the judo club, and Kobayashi calls him "Maa-kun". Kobayashi runs Mayu's art blog for him.

Trivia

Mayu's original design

• Mayu’s birthday is on Butterfly Day (蝶の日), an unofficial holiday in Japan which was founded by the Ryugujo Butterfly Garden.
• Mayu made a cameo in the anime during the credits for the final episode, but had no voiced lines.
• Mayu is ranked 10th in the character popularity poll, according to the Official Fanbook.
• Mayu was initially designed to be Nozaki's sister. He was meant to be a love interest for Mikoshiba, but because of Mikoshiba's established awkwardness with girls, Izumi Tsubaki reworked Mayu into a boy.
  • Mayu is a feminine name, which may be an aspect left over from his original design.
• Mayu is often paired with Mikoshiba in merchandise and promotional art.
